Semantic Discriminability for Visual Communication
نویسندگان
چکیده
To interpret information visualizations, observers must determine how visual features map onto concepts. First and foremost, this ability depends on perceptual discriminability; be able to see the difference between different colors for those communicate meanings. However, visualizations also semantic discriminability, degree which can infer a unique mapping concepts, based concepts alone (i.e., without help from verbal cues such as legends or labels). Previous evidence suggested that were better at interpreting encoding systems maximized discriminability (maximizing association strength assigned while minimizing unassigned concepts), compared system only color-concept strength. increasing resulted in increased distance, so it is unclear factor was responsible improved performance. In present study, we conducted two experiments tested independent effects of distance bar graph data visualizations. Perceptual large enough ensure more than just noticeably different. We found performance, variation when these factors uncorrelated, responses dominated by distance. These results have implications navigating trade-offs color palette design optimization communication.

Speaker discriminability for visual speech modes
Does speech mode affect recognizing people from their visual speech? We examined 3D motion data from 4 talkers saying 10 sentences (twice). Speech was in noise, in quiet or whispered. Principal Component Analyses (PCAs) were conducted and speaker classification was determined by Linear Disciminant Analysis (LDA). The first five PCs for the rigid motion and the first 10 PCs each for the non-rigi...
متن کاملTarget-distractor discriminability in visual search.
Previous research has demonstrated that discriminability of target and background elements has powerful effects on visual search performance. Typically, discriminability has been manipulated between blocks or subjects, allowing subjects to anticipate the discriminability in advance of each trial, and the results, therefore, have been consistent with a wide range of models. Two experiments are r...

This study investigated the effect of using visual aids, semantic elaboration, and visual aids plus semantic elaboration on the Iranian EFL learners' vocabulary learning. To conduct the study, the researchers assigned 49 elementary learners to three homogeneous groups according to their proficiency level. Then, a pre-test of Paribakht and Wesche's Vocabulary Knowledge Scale was given to each gr...
متن کاملVisual Communication Board for Communication Compromised Patients
Background Human speech is the wonderful gift given to human being by God for communicating their ideas, needs and feelings. But an inability to speak, no matter temporary can be catastrophic for the patients in tertiary care. Some patients in tertiary care units may be communication compromised due to various reasons. A quasi experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of vi...
متن کاملNeural discriminability in rat lateral extrastriate cortex and deep but not superficial primary visual cortex correlates with shape discriminability
Recent studies have revealed a surprising degree of functional specialization in rodent visual cortex. It is unknown to what degree this functional organization is related to the well-known hierarchical organization of the visual system in primates. We designed a study in rats that targets one of the hallmarks of the hierarchical object vision pathway in primates: selectivity for behaviorally r...
